A woman in the U.S gave birth to a baby with DNA from three people.

The mother of the American boy, who has now been five months old, was carrying a genetic disease. Before the conception took place, the mother's nucleus was placed in a donated egg, and the child thereby recieved mitochondrial DNA from the donor, according to New Scientist.

The method is still controversial because fertilization was performed in Mexico where there is no ban on the technology.

Experts have warned of the need for careful monitoring of the method, while it is hoped that it can prevent that serious diseases are inherited.
