The illegal migrants who manage to reach the Libyan coast from all parts of Africa, embark in the Mediterranean on makeshift boats. The majority of these are picked up by NGOs, humanitarian organizations, official Italian Coast Guard or naval vessels, according to Il Giornale.

“The government continues to show a worrying incapacity over a situation that day after day becomes increasingly dramatic,” said Paolo Romani, chairman of Forza Italia senators, who urges the Italian Prime Minister, Paolo Gentiloni, to “protect national interests, even if necessary by blocking ‘Access to Italian ports’.
Romani suggests that the UN Security Council should intervene, putting in place “shared strategies to halt the departures” and the ban on the NGOs to “play an attractive role” which only “aggravates situation”.
