A sigh is more than a sign of boredom, depression or apathy. It is in fact a vital reflex that occurs several times an hour, and that helps to maintain lung function – among other things.
Scientists in California have discovered why we sigh.
Their conclusion is that a life support reflex that is controlled by a control system in the brain is the reason we sigh.
This control system ensures that we humans sigh about 12 times an hour, even if we do not think of anything that feels bad.
